Comedians Urge Sebastian Maniscalco to Restore Airplay for Working Comics

Comedians Urge Sebastian Maniscalco to Restore Airplay for Working Comics

A Deadline report tells us SiriusXM replaced the long-running Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel with “Sebastian Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio,” prompting Stand Up for Stand-Up and multiple comedians to argue the change harmed working-class comics by concentrating airplay and royalties among fewer, mostly famous (including deceased) performers.

John plays clips from comedians including Liz Miele, Patton Oswalt, Myq Kaplan, Josh Johnson, Nick Swardson, Eugene Mirman, Jeff Garlin, and Matt Ruby, most praising Maniscalco personally while asking him and SiriusXM to restore broader rotation.

2
00:00:10.419 --> 00:00:13.560
Bonus episode. Hello, I'm Johnny Mac with your daily comedy news.

3
00:00:13.619 --> 00:00:17.219
I'm recording this at 9.48 on Tuesday. I expect this

4
00:00:17.239 --> 00:00:21.050
story is going to move quickly as Sebastian Maniscalco probably,

5
00:00:21.190 --> 00:00:23.449
in my opinion, finds himself with a headache he doesn't

6
00:00:23.469 --> 00:00:26.730
want to deal with. The headline from Deadline is... Comedians

7
00:00:26.769 --> 00:00:31.179
call on Sebastian Maniscalco, SiriusXM, to restore working-class comic airplay

8
00:00:31.320 --> 00:00:34.479
following Raw Dog rebrand. If you're finding me for the

9
00:00:34.520 --> 00:00:36.859
first time in this video, I do want to disclose

10
00:00:37.140 --> 00:00:40.920
I was vice president of comedy and entertainment for SiriusXM.

11
00:00:41.320 --> 00:00:45.210
I programmed the Raw Dog channel from 2004 to 2014.

12
00:00:45.210 --> 00:00:47.869
I'm going to let the comedians tell this story and

13
00:00:47.890 --> 00:00:50.490
the Deadline article tell this story. Let's start with the

14
00:00:50.530 --> 00:00:53.780
Deadline article. They wrote, Sebastian Maniscalco isn't widely viewed as

15
00:00:53.820 --> 00:00:56.119
a controversial comic, but he's found himself in the hot

16
00:00:56.140 --> 00:00:59.880
seat this week, scrutinized over a recent SiriusXM changeover in

17
00:00:59.899 --> 00:01:03.420
which he's prominently involved. Earlier this year, as we first

18
00:01:03.460 --> 00:01:06.780
reported we being a deadline, the satellite radio provider replaced

19
00:01:06.859 --> 00:01:09.909
Raw Comedy, a long-running channel on its subscription service, with

20
00:01:09.930 --> 00:01:15.189
the 24-7 branded channel Sebastian Maniscalco's Comedy Radio. As argued

21
00:01:15.230 --> 00:01:17.730
in a new piece by non-profit Stand Up for Stand Up,

22
00:01:18.129 --> 00:01:21.430
this evolution of SiriusXM's comedy programming has been harmful to

23
00:01:21.469 --> 00:01:24.250
working class comics who depended on raw dog airplay and

24
00:01:24.269 --> 00:01:26.769
the royalties that came with it. What's happened, they've shown,

25
00:01:26.829 --> 00:01:29.799
is that airplay has become significantly concentrated among the industry's

26
00:01:29.900 --> 00:01:34.040
upper echelon of comics, living and dead, impacting passive residual

27
00:01:34.099 --> 00:01:37.219
income going to comics at lower levels. As I've dove

28
00:01:37.379 --> 00:01:39.599
in on this, people are saying that the playlist has

29
00:01:39.640 --> 00:01:41.299
been trimmed from about 800 artists to about 300 artists.

30
00:01:43.010 --> 00:01:45.129
Some of the criticism seems to be that the channel

31
00:01:45.170 --> 00:01:47.650
is now playing a lot of dead comedians. Bob Hope

32
00:01:47.730 --> 00:01:50.150
is being signaled out. I'll talk about my opinions on

33
00:01:50.189 --> 00:01:52.689
programming in the second half of this podcast. What is

34
00:01:52.870 --> 00:01:55.519
really interesting, I'm going to play a lot of clips

35
00:01:55.659 --> 00:01:58.379
from comedians you've heard of that the industry has really,

36
00:01:58.819 --> 00:02:00.920
really rallied about this. I'll play clips in about a minute,

37
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:03.840
but continue with the deadline story. In his own Instagram

38
00:02:03.859 --> 00:02:09.080
video post titled, Sebastian Maniscalco is Destroying Comedy. Comedian Greg

39
00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:12.300
Stone appealed to Sebastian as, quote, one Italian coming to

40
00:02:12.340 --> 00:02:16.240
another Italian, writes Deadline. Quoting Greg Stone, I'm going to

41
00:02:16.259 --> 00:02:18.280
assume you didn't notice the effects of the rebrand because

42
00:02:18.340 --> 00:02:19.840
no Italian is going to take money out of the

43
00:02:19.879 --> 00:02:22.810
hardworking man's pocket. Stone said comedy fans may not notice

44
00:02:22.830 --> 00:02:25.490
the change, but they may see more of their favorite

45
00:02:25.509 --> 00:02:29.110
comics pumping gas and waiting tables. Deadline writes, sources close

46
00:02:29.229 --> 00:02:32.930
to SiriusXM acknowledge the legitimacy of comics concerns. That's a

47
00:02:32.949 --> 00:02:35.150
quote from Deadline there, given the service's long history of

48
00:02:35.189 --> 00:02:38.500
investing in comedians at all career stages. and providing substantial

49
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:42.020
royalties as one of the big homes to Comedy Audio. However, Sirius,

50
00:02:42.219 --> 00:02:44.490
which operates fewer than 10 comedy channels out of a

51
00:02:44.530 --> 00:02:47.870
couple hundred spanning news, music, and more... I'll push back

52
00:02:47.909 --> 00:02:49.590
on the fewer than 10 makes it sound like they're

53
00:02:49.610 --> 00:02:51.750
not trying. That's a lot of comedy channels. So let's

54
00:02:51.789 --> 00:02:53.879
be fair there. We're said to view the rebrand as

55
00:02:53.939 --> 00:02:56.780
a necessary move to address underperformance on a channel that

56
00:02:56.819 --> 00:03:00.419
wasn't meeting listener expectations. Now, that last part surprises me.

57
00:03:00.580 --> 00:03:03.319
My information is 12 years old. I have no data whatsoever.

58
00:03:03.719 --> 00:03:06.099
But when I was there and the last time I

59
00:03:06.099 --> 00:03:08.719
was there was in February of 2014, if my memory serves,

60
00:03:09.879 --> 00:03:11.770
the channel was very popular. I'll put it that way.

61
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:31.210
A SiriusXM spokesperson told Deadline, quote, to deliver a wide

62
00:03:31.259 --> 00:03:34.330
range of comedy offerings across our channels. Now, before I

63
00:03:34.370 --> 00:03:38.229
play the clips, to me, some talking points have gone out.

64
00:03:38.930 --> 00:03:40.770
In these clips, you'll notice everyone is going out of

65
00:03:40.810 --> 00:03:43.789
their way to not only not bash Sebastian, they're going

66
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:46.099
out of their way to say what an awesome guy

67
00:03:46.120 --> 00:03:49.599
Sebastian is. I've never met Sebastian Maniscalco, so I don't

68
00:03:49.620 --> 00:03:51.680
know how he is in real life. I'll assume he's

69
00:03:51.819 --> 00:03:53.699
awesome because that's what everyone is saying, but I am

70
00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:55.659
picking up that everyone is going out of their way

71
00:03:55.759 --> 00:03:59.150
to say that. I also noticed that both Deadline and

72
00:03:59.550 --> 00:04:02.449
And the comedians are calling the channel Raw Dog. I

73
00:04:02.530 --> 00:04:06.310
believe it was rebranded as Raw Comedy maybe a few

74
00:04:06.349 --> 00:04:09.729
years back. Again, this is like, in effect, my ex-girlfriend

75
00:04:09.750 --> 00:04:11.949
or my ex-wife. I don't really pay attention to what

76
00:04:12.030 --> 00:04:15.449
they do since we broke up. But I believe it

77
00:04:15.469 --> 00:04:17.790
was called Raw Comedy and not Raw Dog. So it's

78
00:04:17.870 --> 00:04:22.439
interesting to me that they're using the vintage Raw Dog name. Anyway,

79
00:04:22.459 --> 00:04:25.129
I have a bunch of comedians for you. We'll start

80
00:04:25.170 --> 00:04:27.889
with Liz Mealy, who seems to be at the center

81
00:04:27.930 --> 00:04:30.170
point of the discussion. So here's Liz. Hi, my name

82
00:04:30.209 --> 00:04:30.790
is Liz Mealy.

83
00:04:30.970 --> 00:04:35.069
I'm a stand-up comedian, and this video is for Sebastian Maniscalco.

84
00:04:35.089 --> 00:04:37.240
Oh, my God!

85
00:04:38.449 --> 00:04:44.660
This year, the Raw channel on SiriusXM became Sebastian Maniscalco's channel.

86
00:04:46.180 --> 00:04:46.379
Great.

87
00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:47.060
Fine.

88
00:04:47.199 --> 00:04:50.439
Celebrities have taken over channels before. Never been an issue.

89
00:04:50.540 --> 00:04:51.959
The problem with this is.

90
00:04:53.160 --> 00:04:59.279
The problem is, Raw went from playing 800 working-class comedians

91
00:04:59.779 --> 00:05:05.350
to now playing less than 300 celebrity comedians, like Joan Rivers,

92
00:05:05.589 --> 00:05:08.670
Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Norm Macdonald, just.

93
00:05:08.550 --> 00:05:10.069
Dead comic, dead comic, dead comic.

94
00:05:10.430 --> 00:05:14.790
And then a plethora of very famous, alive comedians that

95
00:05:15.529 --> 00:05:18.490
might not even know about this extra income that they're

96
00:05:18.509 --> 00:05:19.329
about to receive.

97
00:05:19.550 --> 00:05:22.399
A look of confusion and concern comes over their face.

98
00:05:23.720 --> 00:05:26.779
But every working class comedian that has been kicked off

99
00:05:26.800 --> 00:05:28.259
the channel is quite aware.

100
00:05:28.860 --> 00:05:30.959
And it is devastating.

101
00:05:31.319 --> 00:05:32.699
Because of this action.

102
00:05:33.910 --> 00:05:36.910
Hundreds of comedians will no longer be able to have

103
00:05:36.949 --> 00:05:41.339
these royalties. Working class comedians, people that only make money

104
00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:45.220
on the road, that have no safety net, that depend

105
00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:50.839
on this money to just survive, are going from having

106
00:05:50.879 --> 00:05:52.490
that money to nothing.

107
00:05:53.610 --> 00:05:58.029
I'm making a lot of money, you know that. If

108
00:05:58.050 --> 00:06:01.990
you're Sebastian, hi. Maybe you didn't know.

109
00:06:02.149 --> 00:06:03.189
Maybe you didn't understand.

110
00:06:03.209 --> 00:06:07.939
What the hell are you doing? But now you know.

111
00:06:08.750 --> 00:06:10.920
And you can help us.

112
00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:12.120
You can fix this.

113
00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:17.139
We would love to be reincorporated into the channel and

114
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:20.160
start getting the streams and plays that we were getting

115
00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:21.620
before you took it over.

116
00:06:21.639 --> 00:06:24.500
If that person has any class, please, come on now.

117
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:26.610
What was beautiful about Raw.

118
00:06:27.129 --> 00:06:31.819
was that it was an uncensored channel of working, hilarious

119
00:06:31.860 --> 00:06:36.129
comedians of every variety. And we would love for you

120
00:06:36.149 --> 00:06:37.569
to bring us back.

121
00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:39.480
Thank you for listening.

122
00:06:39.740 --> 00:06:41.699
And now I'm going to play six clips in a row.

123
00:06:41.730 --> 00:06:43.050
I'm just going to put them back to back to

124
00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:44.689
back to back so that I don't have to just

125
00:06:44.709 --> 00:06:47.610
jump in and introduce them. They are in order. Star

126
00:06:47.629 --> 00:06:50.189
Trek Ruiner Patton Oswalt, best known as Doug the Vulcan.

127
00:06:50.250 --> 00:06:53.089
Don't start me. That's a topic for another day. Mike Kaplan,

128
00:06:53.350 --> 00:06:57.990
Josh Johnson, Nick Swartzen, Eugene Merman. In Eugene Merman's video,

129
00:06:58.050 --> 00:07:00.230
he mentions a Todd Barry video. I looked for the

130
00:07:00.250 --> 00:07:02.230
Todd Barry video. I didn't see it. The last thing

131
00:07:02.269 --> 00:07:04.990
I'm seeing on Todd Barry threads is from September 26th.

132
00:07:06.170 --> 00:07:08.389
And then the final one is from Matt Ruby. So

133
00:07:08.430 --> 00:07:09.490
here's six clips in a row.

134
00:07:09.529 --> 00:07:13.939
Hey, quick message for Sebastian Maniscalco. I'm in the airport.

135
00:07:14.579 --> 00:07:15.680
I know you and I are used to being in

136
00:07:15.720 --> 00:07:18.379
the airport. We're working comedians.

137
00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:18.459
Hi!

138
00:07:19.379 --> 00:07:24.420
But listen, there's a lot of up-and-coming comedians who are

139
00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:27.040
depending on the money and the checks that they get

140
00:07:27.180 --> 00:07:30.420
from Sirius. And the fact that you and I still

141
00:07:30.459 --> 00:07:32.459
get to tour and still get to work and still

142
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:35.439
get to be as funny as we are is because comedy...

143
00:07:35.529 --> 00:07:37.889
right now is so dynamic and has so many new

144
00:07:38.189 --> 00:07:41.449
young voices that are coming up. But 500 of them

145
00:07:41.470 --> 00:07:42.569
have been.

146
00:07:42.449 --> 00:07:44.889
Booted off of Sirius. You bought that channel.

147
00:07:44.980 --> 00:07:47.060
I know you didn't mean to do anything bad by

148
00:07:47.100 --> 00:07:50.839
doing it. You can easily reverse this decision. Get those

149
00:07:50.899 --> 00:07:54.300
young comedians back on the Sirius channel. Let them get

150
00:07:54.339 --> 00:07:57.410
those checks. Let them keep working. Let them keep coming up.

151
00:07:57.899 --> 00:08:00.819
It keeps us working. It keeps the profession that we're

152
00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:03.180
in dynamic and fun. This is going on.

153
00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:03.879
Way too long.

154
00:08:04.420 --> 00:08:10.310
I have had way too much coffee. But anyway, Sebastian,

155
00:08:10.449 --> 00:08:14.230
come on, man. From one touring comedian to the other, do.

156
00:08:13.569 --> 00:08:14.889
The right thing. Hey, comedy fans.

157
00:08:15.149 --> 00:08:18.610
Comedian Mike Kaplan here with a quick, weird, serious comedy

158
00:08:18.629 --> 00:08:22.100
matter to discuss. One of the most substantial ways that

159
00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:24.720
a lot of working comics make our living is by

160
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:30.540
getting our tracks streamed on comedy channels on Sirius Radio. Historically,

161
00:08:30.600 --> 00:08:34.200
there's been a SiriusXM channel called Raw, which has played

162
00:08:34.580 --> 00:08:37.919
lots of tracks from lots of working stand-up comedians, and

163
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:41.909
it's given us a lot in royalties. You may not

164
00:08:41.950 --> 00:08:45.690
know that in June of 2026, that channel became Sebastian

165
00:08:45.710 --> 00:08:50.740
Maniscalco's Comedy Radio, and the content has changed dramatically. And

166
00:08:50.779 --> 00:08:54.230
as Sebastian himself might say, it ain't right. The channel

167
00:08:54.309 --> 00:08:58.309
used to feature regularly more than 800 comedians, but since June,

168
00:08:58.470 --> 00:09:02.690
that number has dropped by more than 500, and that's sad.

169
00:09:03.809 --> 00:09:06.710
Now the channel is only playing about 300 comedians, and

170
00:09:06.730 --> 00:09:10.870
they're mostly super famous, which means that the working comedians

171
00:09:10.990 --> 00:09:13.730
aren't getting played and aren't getting paid, and this move

172
00:09:13.850 --> 00:09:19.480
only enriches the already super well-off financially and most successful

173
00:09:19.659 --> 00:09:22.240
highest echelon of comics. Is it me?

174
00:09:23.139 --> 00:09:23.379
I wish.

175
00:09:23.970 --> 00:09:26.850
The comics appearing on the channel now include dead ones,

176
00:09:26.909 --> 00:09:29.990
like Joan Rivers and Bob Hope, and they're great, and

177
00:09:30.029 --> 00:09:33.649
that's great, but living comedians need money to live, and

178
00:09:33.750 --> 00:09:36.860
those dead comedians don't need money to be dead. Those

179
00:09:36.919 --> 00:09:39.460
royalties have been a good chunk of how a lot

180
00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:41.639
of comedians have been paying our bills, and at a

181
00:09:41.679 --> 00:09:44.360
time when gas prices and flights are more expensive and

182
00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:46.389
life is lifing the way that it is, it's just

183
00:09:46.629 --> 00:09:49.899
extra challenging. We'd love for Sebastian and the folks over

184
00:09:49.960 --> 00:09:53.840
at Sirius to reconsider how this move has impacted hundreds

185
00:09:53.879 --> 00:09:56.730
of comedians, and we just want working comedians to be

186
00:09:56.789 --> 00:10:01.299
able to work and live. So Sebastian, if you're watching this,

187
00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:06.179
thank you first, and thanks for considering helping to reverse

188
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:09.820
this trend that will really help the comedy community thrive

189
00:10:10.039 --> 00:10:11.799
and make it so that most of us comedians don't

190
00:10:11.820 --> 00:10:15.470
have to stay hungry. And if you're not Sebastian and

191
00:10:15.490 --> 00:10:18.350
you're watching this, thank you for watching and consider sharing

192
00:10:18.409 --> 00:10:20.509
it so we can help the word get to the

193
00:10:20.549 --> 00:10:21.750
people that it needs to.

194
00:10:23.230 --> 00:10:25.120
If you are a comedy fan, you have probably been

195
00:10:25.159 --> 00:10:28.580
watching all day as comedians have been posting about what's

196
00:10:28.600 --> 00:10:32.919
going on with Sirius. And I want to use a

197
00:10:32.940 --> 00:10:34.929
little bit of time to explain why this is so

198
00:10:34.990 --> 00:10:39.070
important to so many comics. there's lots of ways comics

199
00:10:39.110 --> 00:10:42.190
can be discovered. And there's more now than there have

200
00:10:42.250 --> 00:10:44.990
ever been. But some of them are on social like

201
00:10:45.009 --> 00:10:49.220
YouTube and Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, stuff like that. And then

202
00:10:49.269 --> 00:10:52.120
there are other ways. They're more traditional. And these ways

203
00:10:52.529 --> 00:10:57.679
got comics paid pretty immediately with royalties. And these royalties

204
00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:01.519
were no joke. If you were making ends meet, this

205
00:11:01.539 --> 00:11:04.350
could be your rent money. This could be A lot

206
00:11:04.379 --> 00:11:06.710
to you, you know, even if it didn't seem like

207
00:11:06.750 --> 00:11:10.490
a lot at the time. And this channel, Raw, going

208
00:11:10.629 --> 00:11:14.389
from what it was to Sebastian's channel and dropping all

209
00:11:14.450 --> 00:11:16.740
these comics is a huge deal because a lot of

210
00:11:16.750 --> 00:11:20.879
these people really depended on that money. And, you know,

211
00:11:21.720 --> 00:11:24.820
I've been really fortunate. And the more fortunate I've been,

212
00:11:24.860 --> 00:11:28.320
the more important it's been for me to recognize that, like,

213
00:11:28.500 --> 00:11:32.840
everyone deserves as many chances as possible. Your joke being

214
00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:37.529
played on Sirius could mean that someone buys a ticket

215
00:11:37.610 --> 00:11:40.470
that was on the fence or someone discovers you that

216
00:11:40.490 --> 00:11:43.830
didn't know who you were. And I think it's as

217
00:11:43.990 --> 00:11:48.470
important as possible right now to recognize Give people that

218
00:11:48.509 --> 00:11:51.009
are really trying to make a way for everyone to

219
00:11:51.149 --> 00:11:54.149
be happy and have a good time a way to

220
00:11:54.200 --> 00:11:54.799
make a living.

221
00:11:55.559 --> 00:11:55.860
And so I.

222
00:11:57.340 --> 00:12:00.799
Know that this is a thing that maybe Sebastian didn't

223
00:12:00.840 --> 00:12:05.039
even know about, but also I think it's really important

224
00:12:05.179 --> 00:12:08.830
for all of us, for you. If you've seen some

225
00:12:08.870 --> 00:12:11.710
of your favorite comics or some people that you haven't

226
00:12:11.750 --> 00:12:15.110
seen before, but I guarantee you are probably very, very funny,

227
00:12:15.990 --> 00:12:18.490
talk about this thing. one of the main things that

228
00:12:18.570 --> 00:12:22.600
you can do is put in the work to discover them,

229
00:12:22.720 --> 00:12:25.399
put in, put in the work to based off of

230
00:12:25.419 --> 00:12:29.019
a comics recommendation, check out another comic based off of, uh,

231
00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:32.000
your interest in someone's clip, maybe see if they're on

232
00:12:32.039 --> 00:12:34.779
the road and see if they're in your city, you know,

233
00:12:35.139 --> 00:12:37.269
those types of things help too, because at the end

234
00:12:37.289 --> 00:12:39.429
of the day, there's only so much everyone can do,

235
00:12:39.549 --> 00:12:43.629
but this is something that anybody can do. Um, yeah,

236
00:12:43.710 --> 00:12:48.379
I mean, I'm, I hope this gets resolved soon. And yeah,

237
00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:49.980
I hope that everybody's taking care.

238
00:12:53.649 --> 00:12:55.870
Look, I love my friend Sebastian. He's a great comic,

239
00:12:55.909 --> 00:12:58.509
great guy. I love SiriusXM. They've helped me throughout the years.

240
00:12:58.889 --> 00:13:02.250
And they need to continue to help other comics. It's

241
00:13:02.309 --> 00:13:04.169
very important, man. They got to get them back on

242
00:13:04.210 --> 00:13:07.850
the rotation. They depend on it. I love Joan Rivers.

243
00:13:07.950 --> 00:13:08.850
I love Norm Macdonald.

244
00:13:08.870 --> 00:13:12.470
But they... They don't need rent money. At least I

245
00:13:12.519 --> 00:13:14.409
hope they don't. They have passed on, and I hope

246
00:13:14.429 --> 00:13:16.929
they don't need rent money. But they don't. So figure

247
00:13:16.950 --> 00:13:19.049
it out, you guys. You're awesome. You can do it.

248
00:13:19.590 --> 00:13:22.850
Seinfeld doesn't need residual checks. He just doesn't. I don't

249
00:13:22.870 --> 00:13:24.370
care about my plays. You don't have to play me

250
00:13:24.409 --> 00:13:24.649
at all.

251
00:13:25.230 --> 00:13:27.809
I care about the working comedians, the hustlers, the people

252
00:13:27.870 --> 00:13:29.269
that need this to live.

253
00:13:29.529 --> 00:13:33.259
That's very, very important. Do your best, you guys. Figure

254
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:33.500
it out.

255
00:13:33.799 --> 00:13:34.019
All right.

256
00:13:34.419 --> 00:13:37.370
Cheers. And go support your local comedy clubs. very important

257
00:13:37.389 --> 00:13:38.149
too all right.

258
00:13:38.129 --> 00:13:43.320
Cheers hey sebastian this is my 70th attempt at a

259
00:13:43.509 --> 00:13:47.100
video to camera where i'm talking about the serious xm

260
00:13:47.139 --> 00:13:49.480
thing anyway i guess i just wanted to add my

261
00:13:49.539 --> 00:13:53.299
voice to the chorus of the comedians saying thank god

262
00:13:53.740 --> 00:13:56.659
bob hope is dead um so that's a lot of

263
00:13:56.759 --> 00:14:00.779
it and also thank you for getting you know changing

264
00:14:00.820 --> 00:14:03.120
the name from raw dog raw dog was not it

265
00:14:03.139 --> 00:14:05.100
was always weird it was always weird i mean it's

266
00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:07.289
how a lot of people made their money And they

267
00:14:07.309 --> 00:14:09.970
couldn't say it because you can't be at Thanksgiving and

268
00:14:10.009 --> 00:14:12.120
be like, most of my money comes from raw dog.

269
00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:15.259
you know but anyway a lot of people's money did

270
00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:17.159
come from there and so if you could just play

271
00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:19.840
those comics it's also fun to discover comics there you

272
00:14:19.860 --> 00:14:21.879
know i have a small record label with some friends

273
00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:24.960
and you know when we sign comics like a lot

274
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:27.080
of our hope is really that the tracks get ingested

275
00:14:27.100 --> 00:14:29.039
by serious xm and that's how we can kind of

276
00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:30.519
afford to do it anyway you get the whole thing

277
00:14:30.539 --> 00:14:33.389
uh i heard you're a good guy from todd barry's

278
00:14:33.429 --> 00:14:35.649
video and i'm assuming it's true he wouldn't he wouldn't

279
00:14:35.690 --> 00:14:38.379
say that uh in his video if he didn't think it.

280
00:14:38.389 --> 00:14:40.570
I don't want to have to rethink the business model

281
00:14:40.610 --> 00:14:43.129
of a record label where it's like, oh, now it's

282
00:14:43.169 --> 00:14:46.269
like a free download code with every Honda Civic I sell,

283
00:14:46.289 --> 00:14:47.720
because that's like a car dealership.

284
00:14:48.179 --> 00:14:49.100
Okay, anyway, good luck.

285
00:14:49.399 --> 00:14:52.379
I stand in opposition to my fellow comedians and on

286
00:14:52.419 --> 00:14:54.019
the side of SiriusXM, and I'm.

287
00:14:53.960 --> 00:14:54.720
Going to tell you why.

288
00:14:55.429 --> 00:14:58.080
If you don't know, Sebastian Maniscalco took over raw dog

289
00:14:58.100 --> 00:15:01.759
and now they're not playing, you know, my tracks anymore, which,

290
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:03.559
you know, used to be some nice income that I

291
00:15:03.600 --> 00:15:06.299
would get. Uh, but you know, I think this is

292
00:15:06.340 --> 00:15:08.970
better because now they're playing tracks by like Joan Rivers

293
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:11.529
and Bob Hope and Johnny Carson. And, you know, let's

294
00:15:11.549 --> 00:15:15.429
think about the estates of those deceased performers and, uh,

295
00:15:15.830 --> 00:15:19.250
Think about the groundskeepers who need to mow those lawns

296
00:15:19.289 --> 00:15:21.330
and the people who need to clean those swimming pools

297
00:15:21.389 --> 00:15:24.350
and the maids and the butlers. And, you know, someone

298
00:15:24.370 --> 00:15:26.970
needs to be thinking about the estates. And it's hard

299
00:15:27.009 --> 00:15:28.830
to run an estate, especially when the person who left

300
00:15:28.850 --> 00:15:32.320
you all those hundreds of millions of dollars isn't there anymore. Also,

301
00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:34.840
I'm kind of like a comedy conservative, so I believe

302
00:15:34.889 --> 00:15:38.159
in trickle-down laughter. So, you know, now we've got, you know,

303
00:15:38.220 --> 00:15:41.799
Sebastian or Eddie Murphy jokes playing instead of mine on Sirius.

304
00:15:42.620 --> 00:15:44.139
But I think all those laughs are going to trickle

305
00:15:44.179 --> 00:15:46.539
down to the audiences that are going to see me

306
00:15:46.620 --> 00:15:49.620
perform tonight, you know, in front of probably like a

307
00:15:49.659 --> 00:15:51.480
couple dozen people. And like there's just going to be

308
00:15:51.539 --> 00:15:54.419
more laughter for all of us because the pie is

309
00:15:54.470 --> 00:15:59.309
going to increase. And lastly, I'm opposed to collective action.

310
00:15:59.350 --> 00:16:02.110
I see all these comedians posting together at the same time.

311
00:16:02.129 --> 00:16:04.370
It's like, oh, so you conspired? to come up with

312
00:16:04.409 --> 00:16:08.250
some secret plan. We have proper channels for this sort

313
00:16:08.289 --> 00:16:10.600
of thing. You know, there's a pipeline. Why don't you

314
00:16:10.629 --> 00:16:13.100
go to Congress? Congress is great at moving on things

315
00:16:13.139 --> 00:16:15.200
like this. Or let's take it to the FCC. I

316
00:16:16.179 --> 00:16:18.299
haven't been paying a lot of attention to them lately,

317
00:16:18.379 --> 00:16:21.659
but I'm pretty sure the FCC loves comedy. And so

318
00:16:21.820 --> 00:16:24.340
that's the more proper outlet, because this right now, it

319
00:16:24.460 --> 00:16:26.220
feels a little bit like we're a bunch of French

320
00:16:26.299 --> 00:16:27.889
farmers or something. Like, what are we going to do,

321
00:16:27.879 --> 00:16:32.350
like dump a pile of manure outside Sirius XM? So, yeah,

322
00:16:32.429 --> 00:16:36.610
I guess I'm opposed to the comedian community and on

323
00:16:36.649 --> 00:16:40.370
the side of Sirius XM, because I think this not

324
00:16:40.409 --> 00:16:42.730
having my tracks played there anymore and not having that

325
00:16:42.769 --> 00:16:45.320
income is just going to make me even hungrier. It's

326
00:16:45.340 --> 00:16:50.470
really going to make things easier for me.

327
00:16:50.870 --> 00:16:54.169
Jeff Gorlin seems quite passionate about it, even though he's

328
00:16:54.289 --> 00:16:59.110
not really familiar with how Sebastian pronounces his name. Gorlin

329
00:16:59.210 --> 00:17:02.250
is also calling it Raw Dog in this clip. Gorlin

330
00:17:02.370 --> 00:17:05.630
says that he doesn't believe Raw Dog played any of

331
00:17:05.710 --> 00:17:09.390
his stuff. I believe we did back in the day,

332
00:17:09.470 --> 00:17:12.049
but my memory may be faulty and Jeff would know

333
00:17:12.109 --> 00:17:14.490
if he got royalties or not. But I think we

334
00:17:14.529 --> 00:17:16.430
did neither here nor there. But here's Jeff Gorlin.

335
00:17:17.109 --> 00:17:23.420
This is a message that I'm putting out. for Sebastian Manicolco.

336
00:17:26.220 --> 00:17:27.220
Not Manicolco.

337
00:17:27.299 --> 00:17:29.700
I think it's Manicolco. By the way, think about this.

338
00:17:30.369 --> 00:17:33.690
Know the man. It's not important that I can't pronounce

339
00:17:33.750 --> 00:17:36.470
his name, or maybe I did correctly. The point being

340
00:17:36.589 --> 00:17:43.680
is Raw Dog Radio has turned into Sebastian Manicolco Radio.

341
00:17:44.619 --> 00:17:48.160
And what happened is a bunch of comedians who are

342
00:17:48.200 --> 00:17:52.890
relying on some extra cash which is necessary for so

343
00:17:53.839 --> 00:17:58.420
many middle-of-the-road comedians. I'm not saying middle-of-the-road talent. I'm talking

344
00:17:58.440 --> 00:18:01.529
about where they're at as they're developing. the cash comes

345
00:18:01.589 --> 00:18:06.470
in handy. So they have been eliminated from Raw Dog Radio,

346
00:18:06.910 --> 00:18:12.980
and now Sebastian's channel is all older, successful comedians. Me,

347
00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:15.940
I don't think SiriusXM has ever even played a minute

348
00:18:16.160 --> 00:18:21.049
of my comedy. Certainly Raw Dog. So this is nothing

349
00:18:22.009 --> 00:18:26.250
about me. This is about these comics being able to

350
00:18:27.009 --> 00:18:31.509
pay their bills and also get exposure. And, um, by

351
00:18:31.569 --> 00:18:34.369
paying the bills, they can continue and they can develop.

352
00:18:34.769 --> 00:18:38.230
And it brings us new great comedians because they're out there.

353
00:18:38.710 --> 00:18:39.230
They're out there.

354
00:18:39.259 --> 00:18:41.539
People, you have no idea who they are or they're

355
00:18:41.619 --> 00:18:43.619
getting some money from raw dog. You may have heard

356
00:18:43.640 --> 00:18:46.500
them and go, I dig that point being is I

357
00:18:46.519 --> 00:18:54.400
hope Sebastian either sees this, hears about this, or I, um, I, uh, um,

358
00:18:55.720 --> 00:19:00.140
Maybe you can write to SiriusXM. You text them or

359
00:19:00.200 --> 00:19:01.160
you send an email.

360
00:19:01.180 --> 00:19:02.019
You're not going to write.

361
00:19:02.619 --> 00:19:05.319
Although a longhand letter would probably be very impressive.

362
00:19:05.849 --> 00:19:08.730
But help out these comics. Really.

363
00:19:08.750 --> 00:19:09.269
All right.

364
00:19:09.289 --> 00:19:11.069
We'll take the break there. I'll come back with some thoughts.

365
00:19:12.809 --> 00:19:16.250
I'm making this post because Sebastian Maniscalco has decided to

366
00:19:16.289 --> 00:19:19.549
genocide a lot of comedians that used to make a

367
00:19:19.589 --> 00:19:24.309
living on SiriusXM Raw Dog. A lot of younger or

368
00:19:24.490 --> 00:19:27.970
maybe lesser known comedians who had had their content played

369
00:19:28.039 --> 00:19:32.200
on Sirius and were compensated for it are no longer

370
00:19:32.279 --> 00:19:37.400
being played on Raw Dog. So Sebastian's an awesome, amazing guy,

371
00:19:37.420 --> 00:19:42.309
and I'm sure that he will fix that. The Italians

372
00:19:42.380 --> 00:19:45.769
did side with Hitler in World War II, which I

373
00:19:45.789 --> 00:19:46.329
don't love.

374
00:19:46.869 --> 00:19:49.509
But World War II is also interesting.

375
00:19:49.549 --> 00:19:49.970
A lot of people.

376
00:19:50.119 --> 00:19:52.680
are now kind of reexamining that, which I don't know

377
00:19:52.700 --> 00:19:54.900
that that's the greatest way to go, but that is happening.

378
00:19:57.099 --> 00:20:01.819
And yeah, so I just wanted to make this post

379
00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:07.509
to tell him that he's my daddy and I know

380
00:20:07.529 --> 00:20:09.170
that daddy's going to do the right thing.

381
00:20:10.289 --> 00:20:13.190
As the former programmer of the Raw Dog channel, in

382
00:20:13.250 --> 00:20:16.529
terms of what's played, my body of work is there.

383
00:20:16.750 --> 00:20:18.890
I guess somewhere you could go and see what we

384
00:20:18.910 --> 00:20:20.549
played back in the day, so I'll let my work

385
00:20:20.710 --> 00:20:23.880
stand for itself. My programming philosophy was a mix of

386
00:20:24.039 --> 00:20:27.819
hit comedians in all formats play the hits, including talk radio,

387
00:20:28.140 --> 00:20:32.329
news radio, music radio, comedy radio, play the hits. Back

388
00:20:32.450 --> 00:20:35.250
in my time there, the hits were people like Jeff

389
00:20:35.269 --> 00:20:39.849
Dunham and Dane Cook. Mitch Fatel was very popular. Mitch

390
00:20:39.869 --> 00:20:43.019
Hedberg was very popular back in those days. We would

391
00:20:43.079 --> 00:20:47.119
go to festivals and learn about, quote unquote, new comedians

392
00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:49.259
or up and comers. And we would play a lot

393
00:20:49.279 --> 00:20:51.859
of those folks. We would spotlight people. I remember we

394
00:20:51.880 --> 00:20:54.569
did Hannibal Buress week. I remember we did Tim Minchin week.

395
00:20:54.910 --> 00:20:57.609
And we would try and spotlight newer voices that we

396
00:20:57.650 --> 00:21:00.509
got turned on to by going to the festivals. In

397
00:21:00.549 --> 00:21:03.670
terms of what they're playing today, I don't have access

398
00:21:03.690 --> 00:21:05.890
to their research. I don't have access into their insight.

399
00:21:05.910 --> 00:21:08.319
I would ask you just talk to the current programmers.

400
00:21:08.470 --> 00:21:13.059
I don't know. I've never met Sebastian Maniscalco. Based upon

401
00:21:13.119 --> 00:21:17.779
the type of meeting that probably took place, I would guess,

402
00:21:18.119 --> 00:21:21.519
total speculation, that there was a five-minute discussion with Sebastian

403
00:21:21.539 --> 00:21:24.000
who probably riffed off a bunch of comedians he likes

404
00:21:24.039 --> 00:21:26.039
and people wrote them down and that's what's being played.

405
00:21:26.559 --> 00:21:28.700
As for why they would trim the playlist, I don't know.

406
00:21:28.819 --> 00:21:30.910
I can tell you Towards the end of my run there,

407
00:21:31.069 --> 00:21:34.390
I was asked to convert Raw Dog's traditional format, which

408
00:21:34.470 --> 00:21:37.150
ran for most of my 10 years there, into a

409
00:21:37.289 --> 00:21:41.089
modified program called Raw Dog Comedy Hits was the branding

410
00:21:41.130 --> 00:21:43.650
during my last month there. And we stripped out a

411
00:21:43.690 --> 00:21:46.569
lot of the new comedians. You can ask the bosses

412
00:21:46.609 --> 00:21:49.769
there why that decision was made. I suspect this story

413
00:21:49.809 --> 00:21:52.119
will move very fast. I will update it when I can.

414
00:21:52.170 --> 00:21:53.799
I just want to be transparent. I have a very

415
00:21:53.859 --> 00:21:56.769
busy week. I had actually pre-taped a few episodes of

416
00:21:56.829 --> 00:21:59.950
daily comedy news to cover specifically on wednesday morning i

417
00:22:00.009 --> 00:22:03.150
can't be behind the microphone so if i go dark

418
00:22:03.309 --> 00:22:06.089
that's why i'm just a little busy here a spokesperson

419
00:22:06.109 --> 00:22:09.359
has told tmz quote sirius xm works together with our

420
00:22:09.400 --> 00:22:12.099
creative partners to program the best possible experience for our

421
00:22:12.140 --> 00:22:15.440
listeners the launch of sebastian menescalco's comedy radio introduced a

422
00:22:15.480 --> 00:22:19.089
new creative direction and a regularly evolving programming mix for

423
00:22:19.130 --> 00:22:22.269
the channel Sirius XM continues to invest in comedians more

424
00:22:22.289 --> 00:22:24.849
than any other audio platform to deliver a wide range

425
00:22:24.890 --> 00:22:28.690
of comedy offerings across our channels. That seems very similar,

426
00:22:28.710 --> 00:22:31.750
if not verbatim, to the statement that I read from Deadline. Anyway,

427
00:22:31.890 --> 00:22:34.250
I suspect this will move quickly. I suspect we will

428
00:22:34.269 --> 00:22:36.730
hear from Sebastian Maniscalco, and I'll jump back in with

429
00:22:36.809 --> 00:22:40.390
updates as that happens. There was a normal episode in

430
00:22:40.410 --> 00:22:43.049
the feed earlier this morning, and on Wednesday morning, you

431
00:22:43.089 --> 00:22:45.509
won't hear me talk about this topic at all because

432
00:22:45.549 --> 00:22:46.849
I do have a busy schedule. But this is a

433
00:22:46.869 --> 00:22:49.490
bonus episode of Daily Comedy News. See you soon.
