DCN Live x Pool Robot: Conan O’Brien Must Go Returns as New York Comedy Festival Adds 100 Shows

Poolside, Johnny Mac skims the comedy updates while watching a solar-powered pool vacuum crush leaves. The New York Comedy Festival announces another 100 shows, but the host isn’t impressed with the lineup and questions who the true headliner is, noting additions and previously announced names including Marc Maron, Ilana Glazer, Jordan Jensen, Jordan Klepper, Sarah Sherman, Patti Harrison, Daniel Sloss, and Ziwe. Guillermo from “Kimmel” is launching a salsa, with a company president saying he made it and Guillermo approved putting his name on it. The host plugs tomorrow’s audio deep dive on comedian Robert Schimmel and reflects on how some early-2000s comics are being forgotten. “Conan O’Brien Must Go” is out on HBO Max, and Conan says he started in improv and likes when things go wrong.

1
00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:02.759
If you're watching this on YouTube, these are the quick

2
00:00:02.839 --> 00:00:05.160
updates I do in the afternoon. This is really an

3
00:00:05.160 --> 00:00:08.679
audio podcast about twelve minute episodes come out seven days

4
00:00:08.720 --> 00:00:10.560
a week. If you're listening to the RSS feed. What

5
00:00:10.599 --> 00:00:14.000
everybody else is staring at right now is my pool vacuum.

6
00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:18.160
This is a solar powered robot that is supposed to

7
00:00:18.239 --> 00:00:20.640
be skimming the top of the pool, and we're looking

8
00:00:20.679 --> 00:00:23.559
at some leaves. And I don't really know what makes

9
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.920
this thing decide to go into attack mode or not.

10
00:00:27.079 --> 00:00:30.320
It is solar powered and it does need to recharge,

11
00:00:30.359 --> 00:00:33.560
but I'm waiting patiently here. It's pointed right at the leaves,

12
00:00:33.799 --> 00:00:36.200
and if we get lucky, it'll go into attack mode

13
00:00:36.200 --> 00:00:38.759
and clean up the pool right here on exciting video.

14
00:00:39.159 --> 00:00:42.079
And this is this is what I'm talking about when

15
00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:44.439
I talk about the show about give Chris Fleming twelve

16
00:00:44.439 --> 00:00:47.200
thirty or the Letterman weirdness or the Conan weirdness. I

17
00:00:47.280 --> 00:00:49.719
understand that this is just dumb and we're staring at

18
00:00:49.719 --> 00:00:52.920
a pool vack waiting for it to clean up some leaves.

19
00:00:52.920 --> 00:00:54.960
But this is the kind of stupid stuff that I

20
00:00:55.240 --> 00:00:59.840
find funny. The Near Comedy Festival announced another one hundred shows.

21
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:01.960
I'm still not blown away by this lineup. I mean,

22
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.319
tell me who the headliner here is that? Mark Maren.

23
00:01:04.400 --> 00:01:07.200
I mean love Mark, but if he's the ace in

24
00:01:07.319 --> 00:01:09.680
past festivals, he would have been like the eighth best

25
00:01:09.719 --> 00:01:12.079
comic on the bill. Loved the New York Comedy Festival,

26
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:13.799
but it's just not drawing what it used to, especially

27
00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:15.840
when you compare to like what Netflix has been handing

28
00:01:15.879 --> 00:01:19.319
in the last few years. The new Editions joined previously

29
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:23.719
announced headliners including Mark Maren, Alana Laser, Jordan Jensen, Jordan Klepper,

30
00:01:23.840 --> 00:01:26.560
Sarah Sherman, and Patty Harrison. That's one show, Daniel Sloss,

31
00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:29.920
ze Way, Benbankis, Mojo Brooks, and a bunch of others.

32
00:01:30.920 --> 00:01:34.920
I mean, yeah, okay, are you gonna move to some salsa?

33
00:01:35.159 --> 00:01:39.239
Guillermo from The Kimble Show is in the salsa business now.

34
00:01:39.319 --> 00:01:41.040
This makes me laugh. If you're a long time listener

35
00:01:41.079 --> 00:01:43.560
to the audio podcast during the pandemic, I got a

36
00:01:43.599 --> 00:01:46.879
lot of time killing material when George Lopez opened George

37
00:01:46.879 --> 00:01:49.400
Lopez Taco is a business that I think was not

38
00:01:49.519 --> 00:01:53.239
as successful as George Lopez hoped. And then there was

39
00:01:53.319 --> 00:01:55.400
of course Jim Gaffig and Bourbon, which I made a

40
00:01:55.400 --> 00:01:57.000
lot of fun of and that one award. So I

41
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:58.560
don't know what I'm talking about, so I'm not betting

42
00:01:58.599 --> 00:02:03.560
against Guillermo. Here, he told Food Businessnews dot net, your

43
00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:06.000
home for comedy news, I always wanted to have my

44
00:02:06.040 --> 00:02:08.360
own salsa, and I'm very happy. The sauce is so good.

45
00:02:08.439 --> 00:02:11.560
It's fresh and authentic. Now, as you dive into this article,

46
00:02:12.199 --> 00:02:15.240
we find a guy, mister Kirby, who mister Kirby is

47
00:02:15.280 --> 00:02:18.039
the president of the company, and he said, quote, I

48
00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:20.520
made the salsa and sent it to Germo, and Garamo said, yep,

49
00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:22.280
this is good. I'd put my name on this. So

50
00:02:22.520 --> 00:02:26.120
I don't know. Are we just having Kirby salsa? And

51
00:02:26.199 --> 00:02:29.520
it's with Ghermo's name? Not the most important thing. It's

52
00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:32.719
a summer Friday before I forget tomorrow. On the audio podcast,

53
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:34.960
the Deep Dive is about Robert Schimmel, who I got

54
00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:38.199
to work with a few times, more than a few times,

55
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:40.240
when I was back at Sirius. What a great guy,

56
00:02:40.599 --> 00:02:42.800
A great comedian, Like a lot of the comedians from

57
00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:45.759
the beginning of this century, is starting to be forgotten.

58
00:02:46.120 --> 00:02:49.960
Richard Jenny is one of those. Ralphie May, John Pinnette,

59
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.479
like a lot of really good comedians, and you don't

60
00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:54.360
hear about them anymore. I think they came along just

61
00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:57.800
a little before the whole podcasting boom or modern day

62
00:02:57.800 --> 00:03:00.360
YouTube or social media clips, and they're getting lost in

63
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:02.639
the shuffle. Dane obviously still around. He's got the movie

64
00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:04.879
coming around. But you know, like Dane was a monster,

65
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:08.039
and you don't hear much about Dane these days. Conan

66
00:03:08.039 --> 00:03:12.439
O'Brien Must Go is out on HBO Max Today season three.

67
00:03:12.759 --> 00:03:14.800
He caught up with Conde Nast and said, I was

68
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:17.159
never a stand up comedian. I got started doing improvisational

69
00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:19.960
comedy and that's where my comfort is. I love trying

70
00:03:19.960 --> 00:03:22.520
to make something happen. He talked about the fun of

71
00:03:22.599 --> 00:03:25.439
the show is when things go wrong or things are unexpected,

72
00:03:25.960 --> 00:03:28.240
and uh, you know, let's check back in with poolbots.

73
00:03:28.240 --> 00:03:30.680
See what's happening. Hey, look, it woke up, but it's

74
00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:34.319
going the wrong way. What are you doing? All right?

75
00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:38.919
I missed that one. No, I just brushed the pool.

76
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:40.680
So we're going to see a cloud of green. That's

77
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:42.520
what we're running into. But oh, okay, can you get

78
00:03:42.520 --> 00:03:50.759
this leaf let's zoom in? Can you get this guy. Yeah,

79
00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:53.560
that is you. Your comedy news for Poolside back in

80
00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:56.360
the morning on the audio feed with a deep dive

81
00:03:56.479 --> 00:03:59.919
onto the career of who are you doing tomorrow? Is

82
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:01.960
Robert Schimmel, That's who it is. So you want to

83
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:03.319
see if we get this one more leave there's a

84
00:04:03.319 --> 00:04:04.879
big one here again. We're in the green zone here,

85
00:04:04.919 --> 00:04:07.120
I understand. I tell you about the vandals who got

86
00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:09.719
the algae in my pool. I'm going for that little

87
00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:14.000
one got 'em. What happens when we crashed on the

88
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:21.040
another one? Are you not entertained? See you tomorrow.
