01 Calaroga Media. Hello, I'm Johnny Mac with your daily comedy news. Matt Friend is now part of Thursday Night Football, and I went to pull some clips. Now, Amazon has all kinds of tech that won't let you do video recordings, but I have audio hijack, and here is the audio of Matt Friend being hilarious on Thursday Night Football. Now, there are some people that say Matt Friend isn't funny at all, and that his impressions are okay, but I'll let you judge for yourself. I'm so happy to be here. I'm Matt Friend. It's a thrill to be here joining TNF. Thank you for having me. In full disclosure, I'm actually from Chicago, so it's extra special to be here tonight. And this is a great panel. It's half black, half white. It's the Obama special. And let me just say, Thursday Night Football is a show not just for red states or blue states, but these United States.

00 I see you, Richard. Thank you. Come on now. And President Donald Trump also has a message for TNF ahead of the rest of the NFL season. Well, hello, everybody. I hear Jay-Z is performing at the halftime show. It better be in English, I'll tell you that much, right? Are they laughing? They better laugh. Jay-Z can choose himself, but I can't give myself the Medal of Freedom. And how beautiful is Jackson Dart? Look at those arms and that tight ass. He's got golden locks. He's got a great rocking body. Look, I don't talk about a man's body, but he's got a beautiful body. Al Michaels, the miracle on ice. I prefer the miracle of ice, actually. It's a great miracle.

42 They better be smiling. Richard, give me a smile, please. It's so great to be here, truthfully. Amazon Prime's Thursday Night Football combines the excitement of watching an NFL game with the thrill of trying to remember your ex's login info. I'm 28 years old. That's right. Amazon hired a Gen Z comedian. They wanted a comedian from Bill Belichick's Girlfriend's Generation. Boy, everybody's looking forward to that segment every week. John Mulaney will host Saturday Night Live on November 14th. It will be his seventh time hosting SNL. Some people have started criticizing Lorne Michaels, asking if he doesn't know anybody anymore that it's the same host over and over. Not the worst point. Mulaney appears in the upcoming Amazon Prime video, Madden.

31 I didn't know that. John, you host the show. You're supposed to know these things. I'm looking this up. Who's Mulaney playing in Madden? AI Overview tells us John Mulaney plays Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins in Madden. Fascinating. Shane Gillis is in this thing, too? Wait, hold on. And I thought it was a slow news day. Who's Shane playing? John, you host the show. You're supposed to know these things. AI Overview tells us Gillis plays an original character close to the Madden family clan, a role that humorously required a line in the script addressing his visual resemblance to John Madden. Christian Bale plays Al Davis. Catherine Hahn plays Virginia Madden. This thing will be out on November 18th.

14 Nicolas Cage stars as John Madden. Anyway, Mulaney's hosting SNL on November 14th. I wonder what he's promoting. All right, now that all makes sense. Phoebe Bridgers will be the musical guest. The Dane Cook story is moving from video on demand. It will be on Netflix, which means we'll all actually watch it Thursday, November 6th. Jimmy Carr now in a kerfuffle. During a recent show, he addressed the crowd on the subject of Lindsay Clancy. I'll let Jimmy take it from here. There is nothing funny here. And I made some minor edits to take out some F-bombs, but Jimmy Carr's intent is intact. Lindsay Clancy, is that the lady that killed her babies?

56 Yeah. Well, I think that it's a very complex thing to talk to because... I think most people see the headline, woman kills babies, and they go, oh, she's a monster, we should kill her. Because they don't understand what postnatal depression is and they don't understand what psychosis is. But a lot of women that have looked over the cliff that she fell down feel an empathy because they feel like that could have been them. She went mad. She's not evil, she went mad. And a terrible thing happened. If a man had killed three kids, it wouldn't have made the local paper. But women, we just expect, we factor in incredibly kind and generous. Women write kind on their dating profiles. I'd like a man to be kind.

52 Men have never said that. Because they all are. The New York Post shares some people on social media did not appreciate that clip. One wrote, worst Jimmy take ever. Another wrote, maybe delete this, sir. Yikes. A third said, terrible take. Out on Netflix today, Zaynab Johnson's second comedy special, Toxically Optimistic, produced by the Obamas. Based on the show she performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, nominated for Best Comedy Show at the List Festival Awards. Johnson said, I gave myself permission to be silly by inviting the audience to focus on the good during a time when chaos and fear are at an all-time high. I encourage everyone to find a little whimsy in the most unexpected situations. We are now into the slow news day portion of today's show. Recently, Jim Gaffigan was at the Alfred E. Smith Awards. Apparently, he did some football-themed humor, and some people say he's funnier than Matt Friend. I don't know. You'd have to ask everybody else. Gaffigan apparently told the audience, I should say up front, full disclosure, I was not given any rules to what I can or can't say tonight. While this is a fundraiser, and I have no intention of making anyone feel uncomfortable, I am a professional comedian, so I'm pretty confident and go after any topic and any person. No one's off limits. Anyway, Robert Kraft is here tonight. Then he said, moving on, now here to take my attention away from Robert Kraft is New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. And this is where Jim Gaffigan and I could be friends if he would call me back, but we know historically... Jim Gaffigan only calls you back early in his career when your big satellite radio station can help him, and then he forgets your phone number. But that's a whole topic for

25 another day. And it's honestly Sebastian Maniscalco's problem. Now, how's that coming along, Sebastian? How much time do you need? I totally digress. Gaffigan said Woody Johnson is known for his charity work and not just in the AFC East. Zing! Woody, so much has been given away. Most New Yorkers were happy when the Knicks won the championship, but not Woody. That leaves the Jets with the longest championship drought among any New York team, 57 years. To put that in perspective, that is older than the third wives of several of these men. In the Minnesota Star Tribune, Neil Justin's headline, Four Reasons Why Maria Bamford is Minnesota's Greatest Comic. Now, I might be terrible at reading. I keep skimming this thing, and I only see three. So if somebody can help me and find the fourth one, please let me know.

07 But apparently the three are, one, she's unpredictable. Okay. Two, she's got a Midwest work ethic. Okay, fine. And three, she's a sweetheart. But I don't see a fourth one. I'm also curious, is she indeed Minnesota's greatest comic? I meant to prepare the show properly and ask AI, is she Minnesota's greatest comic? But I'm going to ask it now. Jenny Mac, is it a slow news day? Yes, I told you it was a slow news day. Sometimes I like just struggling through one of those shows. Okay. Okay. I have asked AI and it has answered. Yes, she has a strong case and she'd be my pick for originality, says the AI. My closest contenders would be Mitch Hedberg.

54 You're going to lose me there, Maria. Love you. But actually, I have no problem with Maria, but her comedy's never been in my wheelhouse. If you're going to ask me to pick Minnesota's greatest comic and you're putting Mitch Hedberg and Maria Bamford in front of me, new contest for Hedberg. The AI also says Louis Anderson is in the conversation for warmth and storytelling. Is there anyone else? I'm asking the AI. Anyone else? Beyond Bamford, Hedberg, and Anderson, Minnesota's contenders include Al Franken, Liz Weinstein, co-creator of The Daily Show, Joel Hodgson, who created Mystery Science Theater 3000, Nick Swartzen, I don't think we need to worry about that, and Mo Collins, who is especially strong in sketch and character comedy.

35 I'm going to go with Mitch Hedberg there. Vulture has an article. It is called Nine New Comedy Specials You Should Watch When You Have a Moment. Do you guys understand how much sports there is during Knicks season, USC football season, and the NFL season? And you go to trivia on Wednesday nights. There's no time to watch comedy specials, despite how you pay your mortgage hosting a show called Daily Comedy News. There's no time. All right, their recommendations include Nimish Patel, Buy the Dip, I feel like I watched a few minutes of that, and the point being that I'm not sure means I think I did, and it probably wasn't that good. I have notes here on my top specials. Let me see if I added this at all. No, I didn't write it down at all, but I'm going to add it right now to my past section. But the vultures like it. They also like Vanessa Gonzalez's Momoa, which is on Hulu, which some people say is where you put your comedy special when you're a little past prime. And I think we have a lot of evidence of, you know, Jamie Foxx's just came out.

33 And OK. But Vulture says in some chokes of Momoa, Vanessa Gonzalez is a propulsive storyteller. She specializes in recreating picturesque scenes from her life without ever pausing for the audience to process the introduction of a new detail. Stavros Halkias' Uncle Stav is on the list. I like that one. Where do I have that one ranked? Let's see. I have that at number 80. Curious, my list right now is Chris Fleming at number one, Rory Scovel, Ryan Hamilton, Trevor Nowak. Williams, Pete Holmes, Derek Stroop, Stavros, Joe Coy, I won't do the bit, Rami Youssef, and Jackie Cation are my top 11 right now. Vulture Likes, Leonard Utz is a little something something that's on YouTube. I need to get to that one. I've always liked him. David Drake's tight on YouTube. Let's see. That one's been off my radar. David Drake is at his best when he's at the end of his rope over the course of his last three comedy specials, all filmed at the same bowling alley in Brooklyn.

23 Love it. He's constructed an image of himself as a husband and father, barely keeping his head above water. In tights, he returns to the bowling alley as beleaguered as ever. That could be fun. Rory Scovel's show must go on. Yep, that's way up there. Mary Beth Barone's Galaxy Brain. Not for me, but I get it if it's for you. Derek Gaines Goodlam on Tubi. You want me to watch comedy specials on Tubi? Vulture says every few months a comedian goes viral by uploading a joke about trans people and advertising it as an acutely good trans joke or something to that effect. The jokes are rarely as groundbreaking as their captions claim, and much like how they're marketed, treat trans people as props to prove a cynical comedic point. Having said this, if Derek Gaines promoted the trans joke from his special Goodlum this way, he might actually have a case. Interesting.

07 I won't spoil it there. Milo Edwards, Sentimental on YouTube, also off my radar. Let's see. It's the rare UK solo show where spoon-feeding the significance of the show's title at the beginning ends up paying off. I already forgot the title. It is Sentimental. Okay. Vulture says, as heavy-handed as this approach is... It is verbose, fast-paced, and dense with material and dark subject matter like Edwards being recently orphaned, euthanasia, and Britain's attitude towards refugee. There's a hilarious three. They also have previously mentioned Louis C.K. Ridiculous. I didn't like that one. Tom Cashman's The Formula for Happiness is on YouTube. Off my radar. Let's see. We're told that Tom Cashman plays the Alex Horne role on Taskmaster Australia. He says at the top of the special, people told me recently not to surround myself with yes men. So I've been doing the opposite. I've surrounded myself with no women. Yeah, no women. Just a bunch of really supportive fellas. They told me you'd like that joke. Ryan Hamilton's This Just Hit Me. Love Ryan Hamilton. Can't get enough. Ali Sadiq's My Father. Caitlin Palufo's Prosciutto Rose. That's on YouTube. I haven't gotten on that one yet and I like her.

10 Horatio Gould's Space Cowboy on YouTube. I got to get to this one as well. Vulture says comedians everywhere can stop trying to pinpoint the difference between Millennials and Zoomers on stage because British stand-up Horatio Gould has finally solved the puzzle. Of course, Millennials are cringe, he explains in Space Cowboy, because they came of age with the internet and sincerely believed their dreams would come true. Emmy Blotnick's What's Her Secret on Guerrilla Comedy Plus. Laura Roodcoat's Little Tiny What Show on YouTube. Eugene Mermin's Here Comes the Whimsy on YouTube. Nikki Glaser's Good Girl on Hulu. You know my thoughts on Hulu specials. Rami Youssef's In Love on HBO. That was pretty good. Shang Wang's Purple. I love Shang Wang. I didn't love that special. That's on Netflix.

54 That's Stellings. We're looking for people who do huge numbers on social media on YouTube. Great, great title there. Aaron Chen's Funny Garden on Netflix. I like Aaron a lot. Julio Torres' Color Theories on HBO. Was that this year? I felt like that was last year. Pete Holmes, Silly Silly Fun Boy, one of my favorites that's now on YouTube. Shane Moss, Tripp's First Dose on YouTube. And my favorite special of the year, Chris Fleming, live at the Palace on HBO. Sounds like I gotta stop watching sports and I gotta go watch some specials on YouTube. A reminder that you got to vote this year. The midterm elections are coming up on Tuesday. You can early vote. You'll have to do a little work. Get out your phone. It's already in your hand. Look up early voting near me and go vote. Maybe you're into what's going on.

35 You're like, I would like more of this. Well, then vote for those guys. And if you're like, I'm not really feeling what's going on right now, then vote for the other guys. Or maybe there's a third set of people that you want to vote for. I'm not telling you to vote for. I'm just telling you, go vote. It is super important. From time out, the comedians to watch, Felicia Folks is one of those comedians. We were told Folks first got in a stand-up as an after-class diversion at Santa Monica College. And then was the first black woman to be a door guy at the famed comedy store where she worked up her way to being a paid regular. They asked her the funniest thing about her life right now. She said, I was just on that Netflix show with Kevin Hart. And so now people recognize me, but I'm still in L.A. So people will be stopping me and like, are you from that show? Can we get a picture? But I'm like, I was here yesterday and the day before. I've been here for years. I see you all the time. The one that joke that always lands. She says, I have my own personal beef with Trader Joe's and I feel like it looks like a kid rails a grocery store and the carts are too small and they're drawing the prices on. I want them to go in the back and print out the prices and put it on. Stop playing these games with me.

32 All the parking lots are crazy. So that always works because people feel very personal about their grocery store. They start messaging me about Irwan and what they think about that. People in L.A. have a lot of opinions about grocery stores. And that is your Slow News Day comedy news for today. I think we shucked and jived our way through one. No, not too bad. And I will see you tomorrow.
