Kenan Thompson - Shane Gillis warrants a conversation if he returns

Kenan Thompson tells Axios Live he doesn’t know Shane Gillis as mean but would want a conversation if he returned, stressing balance between creative freedom and avoiding harmful words while noting Gillis controversy overshadowed newer cast member Grace and musical guest Rosalía. He notes Jon Stewart will remain on The Daily Show through the next presidential election (hosting Mondays) and highlights Michael Kosta’s segment about Trump repeatedly objectifying male candidates’ looks. New releases include Netflix’s Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story and a YouTube special from Alfred Robles executive produced by Gabriel Iglesias; Janelle James announces a Netflix special How Romantic (Nov. 10). Jay Leno says the late-night format is dead due to ad load and podcasting’s rise; Bert Kreischer talks burgers and steak. 0:03 Calaroga Shark Media. Hello, I'm Johnny Mac with your daily comedy news. Johnny Mac, you never talk about Shane Gillis. I know, right? Luckily, Kenan Thompson spoke to Axios Live about Shane Gillis. You know, yeah, I know Shane and I don't know him to be, you know, a mean person necessarily. Um, But yeah, if he were to come back, I'm sure we would have a conversation of like, how do you think that went? You know what I mean? And what do you think you could have done? Like a little kid. I would just sit him down and be like, yeah, so what do you think we could change there, pal? And just figure it out. But yeah, I guess it's just finding the balance of both things, like allowing creative liberties, but also kind of like watching your step as far as you know, harmful words are concerned because I think everybody's just, like you said, everybody's focusing in on this one specific word or one specific part of the monologue.

02 And then the rest of the monologue or even the rest of the show is getting overshadowed. Like Grace, one of our newest, you know, cast members had a phenomenal show and like, it's sad because nobody's even talking about it. Even Rosalia's like even kind of getting overshadowed because we want to go back and forth on what's offensive and what's not. So, Yeah, I can't really say like if they're going to have him back or not. That's not my decision. But if he were to come back, then, yeah, I think we would have to have some sort of like a real chat where, you know, people's actions don't, you know, kind of overly like wave pool the rest of us, if you will. As we discussed earlier in the week, Jon Stewart is staying with The Daily Show. He addressed the audience.

46 I just want to mention before we go a little bit of good news. For those of you who enjoy The Daily Show. I'm sure you're out there somewhere. We told you a while back that we were going to do everything in our power to continue to be on the air through this next presidential election. And I'm truly happy to announce that It has come to pass. John hosts The Daily Show on Mondays. Other guys host it other days. One of the guys is Michael Kosta, who noticed that the president of the United States seems to have a new fancy. As we all know, he has a very important day job looking for things on the map to rename. But with the midterms and the homestretch, he's also been holding daily rallies in support of embattled Republican candidates. And lately, he's hit upon a very interesting observation about many of these men.

41 Rick Jackson's a very handsome, distinguished, beautiful-looking guy. I wish Tim didn't look that good. He's a very handsome guy. I actually think Mike Collins is a good-looking man. And he's all man. He's all man. Look at that jawline. I'm telling you. I never saw that. I don't do this with men very often. I started examining his body because I didn't know he was a great athlete. And I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass and I looked at the whole. Yes, you live your truth, Donald. Costa stayed on the subject and had even more about what the president of the United States is into these days.

23 Now, that last guy whose ass Trump was objectifying was John Husted. He's the incumbent Republican senator in Ohio. And apparently he made quite an impression because Trump was still thinking about dad ass a few days later. I stood right over here. And I examined his ass. I never did that. No, I never did that with a man before. I examined his ass and then I looked at his shoulders. I looked at his feet. I looked at his hand. I looked at his jawline. OK, so you examine his shoulders, his feet and his jawline. Does Trump think John Husted is a horse? I fed him a carrot. I brushed his beautiful mane. By the way, huge ass.

08 Out today on Netflix, Paralyzed by Hope, the Maria Bamford story. It premiered earlier this year at Sundance. We are told it is a funny and tender glimpse into the childhood, early career and present day life of Maria Bamford, who is known for, quote, turning radical honesty into radical comedy, often blurring the line between performance and personal crisis. Jay Leno has been making the rounds. He was asked if he thinks that late night is over, which is a good time to plug the podcast is late night dead. A new episode will be out on Sunday in its own feed. That feed is called is late night dead. And episode four talks about Conan giving the tonight show back to Jay Leno of all things. Here's a Jay Leno.

51 As a model, that format is dead. I mean, podcasting is the new thing. Sure. I mean, The thing that really killed it is not the fact that Letterman and I were so good or any of that nonsense. We just happened to be there at the right time. It's the last days. They passed a law since they weren't making as much money. After 1130 at night, you could have another eight minutes of commercials in an hour. If I see Jake from State Farm again, I'm going to shoot myself in the head. I try to watch late night. I watch the monologue. And then there's Six minutes of commercials? And the 30-second spots are so well done. Yeah. They look like two-minute spots.

32 Sure. They have cars and explosions and airplanes. Yeah, very entertaining. Okay, really. And I go, Jesus, when we come back. Bert Kreischer hosted the Burger Bash at the New York City Wine and Food Festival. He has strong opinions about what makes a great burger. You know, I got to be honest with you. A good burger is like great sex. I went through a smash burger phase where I was having them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had to stop making smash burgers. The one thing, I hate frying things on Something's Burning. Anytime we're like, we're going to deep fry, I get so, it's such a pain in the ass to deep fry anything.

13 Bert explains more, only the way Bert can. You've been warned. My mouth's watering. Can you hear that? My mouth's actually freaking watering. I'm so good at steaks. I mean, that's all I eat now. I just had a steak for breakfast, and I'm letting one get to room temperature to have for lunch. That's how often I eat steak. Janelle James will have a Netflix special. It is called How Romantic. November 10th is the date in How Romantic. Janelle James covers everything from body counts and bank accounts to why women should wrestle men. I like the copywriting there of body counts and bank accounts. That was well done. And we have a clip to take us into the break. I also think that I get a lot of grace from the men because you guys know that I'm telling the truth.

56 You are dangerous. You know you're dangerous. And I know this because you're scared of each other. Right? That's why guns exist. It's not for us. So you guys can fight each other and kill each other. It's not for us. When women are like, hey, can you walk me to my car? It's late at night. Can you stand here with me? I feel unsafe. Can you protect me? Right? We're not scared of the boogie woman. coming up are the midterm elections. It is super important that you vote. I am here to encourage you to vote and early voting is available now. You'll have to do two seconds work. Your phone is already in your hand if you're listening to me. So just type in early voting and they'll tell you where to go or wait till election day.

38 That's fine. That's what I'm going to do. I'll get up. I'll hit the National Donut Chain, get a nice coffee. Oh, by the way, my local National Donut Chain, they're renovating. I went there Monday morning and it was closed. I'm like, wait, did they close forever? And then I had to go on Facebook and I found out that they're renovating. But No iced coffee this week. I am struggling. Never mind the donuts. I mean, I can live without the donuts. I could lose a couple pounds. We all know this. But the iced coffee, no iced coffee in the morning? Absolutely killing me. Anyway, on Election Day, I will get up. I will go to the hopefully reopened, renovated National Donuts chain. And then I will go vote for somebody. And you should also vote for somebody. So it's super important. That you vote. Got my Knicks ghost hat on. I have to wear a lot of this between now and Halloween. You can only wear a Knicks ghost hat so many times. The Knicks take on the Celtics tonight at 7. We'll see if they can rebound from their disappointing loss. I think they'll be OK, but it's a good statement for the Sixers and LeBron. So that should be interesting all season long.

31 Tracy Morgan was at the game. I said this on threads. I'm being a little catty here, but they did a close up of Tracy. And when you zoom in on Tracy, that hairpiece, Tracy. I don't know. I don't know. It works from far away. But when they zoomed in, I was like, oh, OK. Anyway, he was there and he got a live mic on NBC and started goofing on LeBron James' son, Bronny. You're not scared of nobody. Yeah. And Bronny look like he got Juco ball. Written all over him. I just want to. Say what I feel. What you want? You're going to cry tonight. That's what I want to see. I'm right there. Sixers 106, Knicks 100. How disappointing. And it is Friday. So it is time for the Comedy Stock Market.

19 Comedy Stock Market. Every week on the Comedy Stock Market, we take a look at comedians and we treat them like stocks. We try and sell high and buy low. This doesn't mean someone who's good or bad. It just means where the value is. I think this week we should buy some Jon Stewart. If he's going to be in the chair for another two years through the next presidential election, he will be very influential on the culture. So I'm glad Jon Stewart is sticking around for an election cycle. We kind of missed you last time, Jon. Was it last time or the time before? It was last time. I think we missed you last time, John. Where were you? We needed you. So I think he's gotten the lesson. We'll buy some Jon Stewart there. We will sell Theo Vaughn. Theo Vaughn had a horrible week. People do not... like this special. He's getting ripped to shreds. So we might be a little now post-peak Theo Vaughn. And we will continue.

07 To sell Sebastian Maniscalco's stock. Sebastian, how much time do you need to drag some comedian names into the log? Now, when I did this in 2013, this was my actual job. It would take me one second. How much time do you need to play the working comedians on your radio station there? I don't know. So buy Jon Stewart, sell Theo, and sell Sebastian. That is your comedy stock market this week. Out today, comedian Alfred Robles has a special on YouTube, executive produced by Gabriel Iglesias. This one taped at the Ontario Improv in California. Robles shares tales of growing up with a strict Latino Catholic mother, navigating the dating world, and life on the road. And Culture Clash in their sub stack. Under the headline, Shane Gillis isn't funny. Here are some comedians who are. All right, let's see who the Culture Clash like. They like Julio Torres, former writer on The Tonight Show and SNL, known for his delightfully eccentric comedy and Los Espookys. Okay, not terrible. Kate Berlant.

05 I didn't get to that special yet. We were told to also check out her collaborations with John Early. Also on the list, Jaboukie Young-White, first gain notice as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Also on the list, Chris Fleming, make 1230 great again. Why is Seth Meyers hosting 1230 late night when Seth Meyers could be running Saturday Night Live, taking over for Lorne Michaels, and then we could have fun at 1230 again. Chris Fleming on the list, so I love the list. Have you watched Chris Fleming's HBO special? You should. And two more on the list. Z-Way, who blew up during the pandemic by conducting pointed interviews with celebrities on Instagram Live. And Gus Haggerty does brilliant hyper-specific characters on Instagram and TikTok. Think, quote, Long Island mom moving through something before her son's game. I'm not familiar with Gus. I will have to check Gus out. And that is your comedy news on a Friday. No deep dive tomorrow. Just I need a break from it. I want them to be good. I don't want to just do them for doing them sake. And it actually worked backwards for me. Originally, at the beginning of the summer, I did the deep dives to take the production lift off of me. And then it is now, because you guys like them so much, I want them to be good.

14 I don't want to half-ass the deep dive. So I'd rather just do normal episodes than a half-ass rushed deep dive. So they'll come back probably in January. Long-time listeners know the comedy news is a little slow in January, which is when Comedy Survivor will come back. That was a lot of fun last year. I feel like it just wrapped up, but no, that was months ago now. So we'll be bringing back Comedy Survivor. So no deep dive. Normal episodes all weekend. And on Sunday in the other feed, a new episode of Is Late Night Dead? We'll take a look at what happens when Conan O'Brien gets The Tonight Show. That is your comedy news for today. See you tomorrow.
