Shane Gillis Addresses SNL Backlash

Johnny Mac delivers daily comedy news with an adult-content warning, reporting that Shane Gillis opened for Dave Chappelle in Austin and spent part of his set discussing the SNL backlash, appearing shaken and saying he understood why people were upset. He covers Russell Brand testifying in his London criminal trial, denying all allegations, describing the impact on his life, and being cross-examined about past claims and jokes. The BBC is still scheduling Vittorio Angeloni’s sitcom “Rewarding” for next month while calling Angeloni’s assault joke unacceptable. Jimmy Carr argues comedy should be taught in schools as a transferable communication skill. Netflix releases “SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of,” highlighting the sketch show’s influence. Mac’s “comedy stock market” says buy John Mulaney, sell Shane Gillis and Sebastian Maniscalco, then shares Jonathan Kite’s Bourdain-style CVS bit, a profile of goblin character John Goblikon, and urges listeners to vote.

01 There will be. A lot of adult themes in today's podcast, so if for some reason you listen with kids, don't do that today. Hello, I'm Johnny Mac with your daily comedy news. Let's start here from the Daily Beast, the headline, mega-friendly. SNL host breaks silence in surprise show. The mega-friendly comedian is Shane Gillis this time. The Daily Beast writes, the Saturday Night Live host who incited a barrage of backlash is finally ready to talk about it. According to social media users who claim to be present at Dave Chappelle's Austin show on Monday, Shane opened for Chappelle. That's a pretty good lineup there. One person on Reddit said Shane Gillis spent the first third of his set, quote, discussing the SNL joke.

51 That user wrote that Gillis, quote, seemed visibly shaken and humbled by the backlash. I wouldn't say he explicitly apologized. He did not ever say, I'm sorry. but he was clear that he understood why people were mad at him. The person on Reddit added, If anything, I felt that he was trying to work through it on stage with us in real time. Now, I've had fun with the Daily Beast because they always refer to MAGA comedian Nate Bregazzi, and here's what they did here. They wrote, Gillis, one of several quote-unquote red state comedians who orbit Joe Rogan, occasionally tries to distance himself from the anti-woke comedy crowd. Though Gillis attended Trump's birthday cage match in June, he later told Rogan he avoided pictures of the MAGA elite on purpose. Unlike Nate Bregazzi. I love how they got the shot in there. Unlike Nate Bregazzi. And that Shane did not vote for Trump in 2024. Does that imply that he voted for Trump in 2020 and or 2016?

41 Ask Shane Gillis. All right, on to all the horrible stuff again. If you're not listening alone, hit stop on this. This is going to get ugly pretty quickly. Russell Brand took the stage in his criminal trial in London on Wednesday. He denied all the accusations against him. He also revealed that he was unable to get anyone to testify on his behalf. Russell Brand was called by his lawyer Ian Winter as the first witness in the defense. Sky News reports Winter asked Russell Brand if he had committed each of the alleged offenses he's being accused of. Russell Brand repeatedly replied no. Russell Brand was asked about his popularity. Brand said his marriage to Katy Perry in 2010 brought about quote-unquote staggering fame. Brand said, my entire life has been consumed by these allegations. I have devoted myself to these matters. He called the Channel 4 documentary about him devastating.

31 He also claimed that he was unable to visit his sick son in the hospital because of the accusations. Outside the courthouse on Wednesday, Russell Brand told journalist Sky News Reports, Due to the circumstances of today, I think it would be inappropriate for me to say anything other than I'm very grateful that today is a day of truth and justice, and we are blessed that as yet we have a system that can accommodate such things. While being cross-examined, Russell Brand denied that he had a goal of sleeping with 5,000 women. He did admit to being, quote, obsessed with sex when he was younger. I'll read this next part verbatim because I can't believe that this is a thing that was said. Asked if he ever said he wouldn't leave a woman alone until he slept with her, Brand referenced a quote from Woody Allen, the director who's also faced his own allegations.

13 Brand is quoted here as saying that sounds specifically like a riff on a Woody Allen joke when he said the only advice my dad ever gave me on his deathbed was always try and I'll clean it up. Bang the waitress. Russell Brand added it was a joke. Perhaps not the best timing there. I'm not a lawyer. One exchange caught my eye. This from The Times. They say the actor has denied he, quote, pretended to be gay to, quote, make girls trust him. The jury was shown an extract from Russell Brand's book, My Bookie Wook, which was published in 2007. A caption next to one of the photos reads, This is the exact moment when I decided to act gay to attract girls. It took 15 years to produce results. The prosecutor said, That's something you would do, wasn't it? That was something you would do to make girls trust you? Russell Brand said no. New topic. The BBC is currently planning to air the new sitcom from Vittorio Angeloni. I told you about him earlier in the week. He is the comedian that came under fire for joking about a public figure being sexually assaulted. The BBC had previously said they were actively considering whether to broadcast Angeloni's new show, Rewarding, due to the mounting concerns around the joke. The Independent reports that it is still scheduled to be broadcast next month on BBC Northern Ireland. However, a BBC spokesperson said the broadcaster is, quote, discussing the issues raised with the independent production company involved. The comments made by Vittoria Angeloni are unacceptable and wrong. They do not reflect BBC values and would have no place in our output. Jimmy Carr was on the high-performance podcast. He said, He said, You'll write

09 down and order your thoughts. You'll learn to communicate them and you will speak in your own authentic voice. Is that not more valuable than grade three on the piano? I think it is because that's a transferable skill. No matter whether you do stand-up or not, being able to present a group and have a little bit of humor in that will help your relationships and help your job and help your presentations and everything else. It's a valuable skill to learn. I want more people to join the choir. I want more people involved in comedy. Now today on Netflix... The oddly titled SCTV, The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of. I don't know who this is. Maybe I'm just really, really old. Maybe my kids watching Netflix would be like, SCTV, what's that? But it's not like SCTV is this obscure show with, who are these people on SCTV? We've never heard of this show. Anyway, SCTV, The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of, out today, tells the story of one of the most influential sketch comedy series in TV history.

58 I thought you said we never heard of it. Second City Television helped boost the career of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis, and more. Why are you shading Dave Thomas there? Wasn't Dave mentioned? Also, Netflix in September 1st has been showing episodes of SCTV. They're right there on the front page, at least if you log in as me, so it's not like we've never heard. Of this one. Anyway, I'll watch. Comedy Stock Market. It is Friday, and every Friday we take a look at the comedy stock market. What we do here is we try and find value in comedians. Who's overvalued? Who's undervalued right now? It's that simple. We're not saying they're good or bad. We're just saying basically overrated, underrated, or overvalued, undervalued.

46 First up, let's buy some John Mulaney. Why? Everybody loves John Mulaney, I know, but he's going to have another resurgence here because he's in a couple movies coming up, and he's hosting Saturday Night Live in, what's today, Friday in eight, 15 days. Had to do some math there. I forget who it is this weekend. Then it's Drewski on the 7th and then Mulaney the weekend after. So let's buy some John Mulaney. Let's sell a little Shane Gillis. We've been loading up on Shane Gillis most of the summer. But again, you sell high and you buy low. And Shane is taking a little punches right now. So maybe we should cash out a little bit of Shane. I'm not turning on Shane. I'm not anti-Shane. I think Shane is pretty funny. But in terms of the comedy stock market, let's sell a little Shane. And hey, Sebastian Maniscalco. It's been three full weeks now. Can you not drag a working class comedian into your log there at your little radio station? What is going on? I'm going to continue to hammer Sebastian Maniscalco every single week until this gets done.

44 I had the job myself. I know how easy this is. If you wanted it done, you'd pick up the phone and it would be done in two minutes. So sell Sebastian Maniscalco. Sell Shane Gillis. Buy John Mulaney. That is your comedy stock market on a Friday. Looking ahead to the weekend, no deep dive this weekend. We'll have regular episodes all weekend long. There's also a new episode out Sunday in the Is Late Night Dead feed. I'll start sharing those episodes in this feed in the middle of November or so. But if you want to check those out in advance, what are we up to? I think it's episode four. Is this week's? I produced them in advance. Is this week Conan or are we on to Steve Allen? Maybe I think this is Conan part two this week. John, you host the show. You should know the thing. I don't know. Just follow the show. There's either three or four episodes there. And when you grab the show on Sunday, there'll be four or five. I don't know. Is late night dead? Wherever you found this show. I have my Knicks ghost hat on today because pretty soon it's going to be like, why is he wearing that? You're probably even today like, why is he wearing that? Because it's the Knicks and it's a ghost and it's Halloween. One of my favorite things of the year is Jonathan Kite does these impressions of Anthony Bourdain, except Anthony Bourdain going to mundane places like CVS. Here's Jonathan Kite.

54 Welcome to the candy shop dressed up as a drugstore, CVS, where you can fill your prescription and your pumpkin pail. Because when Halloween brings out the dead, their candy aisle, it's alive. Tonight, we take the tradition of taking candy from strangers into a four-course tasting menu. Childhood favorites, all locally sourced from a seasonal section of confectionaries. So, trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat. This is Farm to Table. We begin with an amuse-bouche. Nerds, the house caviar. Crunchy, tangy pearls of grape and strawberry, presumably harvested from Swedish fish. Which brings us to the fish course. Served sashimi-style with zero grams of protein. Talk about a red herring. This waxy catch has never seen the ocean, but still tastes like plastic. Not grilled, broiled, or fried, though it helps if you're baked. Finally, dessert.

55 The most exciting chocolate flight since Soul Plane. They claim fun-sized sandwiches. satisfies, but I've never heard a woman say that about something this small. In fact, it just makes them snicker. Let's keep it Halloween. LA Times caught up with John Goblicon. Dave Rispoli created John Goblicon to be his own person. The Green Goblin fronts a metal band. I love this. Raspoli told the LA Times no one's going to be stoked to find out it's just a generic white guy from Florida. Goblikon's origin story begins in the music video No One Survives by the goblin metal band NecroGoblikon. The concept had the goblin going out to bar her, hoping to charm the princess. Instead, she falls for Prince Charming.

38 Since then, Goblikon has become a fully flushed-out character and the host of the podcast Right Now with John Goblikon. John Gobblecon in character talked about Dave Raspoli and said, who's Dave to me? He's a guy. I was having him prep the podcast guest. Then he started weaseling his way on the set every now and then. And every now and then I'd say one of at a very 100,000, 24 people are like, who's Dave? And I'll just have to be like, honestly, it's five foot six of mediocre talent. That's what I like to say. That is amazing. Raspoli said, I had my normal Dave acting career jobs that had nothing to do with John Gobblecon. And the words didn't cross much for a while. People had no idea what to do with a comedian who also dressed up like a goblin. They literally looked at me like I was crazy. And that is your comedy news for today. Enjoy trick or treating. And don't forget, you're going to vote on Tuesday.

24 You can still do early voting. Just your phones in your hand. Look up early voting near me if you're worried about lines or whatever else might happen on Tuesday. Have you been on Twitter? Everybody's talking about the power going out for 90 days. If the power goes out for 90 days. And there's no podcast that morning. That's why. But if I have cell service, I'll put that out an episode. But jokes aside, make sure that you get to vote so you can early vote today or you can do what I do. And I'm going to get up Tuesday. I never have a problem at six in the morning. If you wait later in the day, there could be long lines. But if you get out of bed and get yourself an iced coffee and go vote, you shouldn't have a problem on Tuesday. Anyway, it's super important you vote. And that's your comedy news for today. See you tomorrow.
